30th Anniversary of A Confederacy of Dunces
John Kennedy Toole’s Pulitzer Prize winning novel, A Confederacy of Dunces, was published in 1980, eleven years after the author’s suicide at age 32. Ignatius Reilly, Toole’s “slob extraordinary,” is considered one of the most original and hilarious characters in American literature.
UL & Ken Toole
Toole was an Instructor in English at UL (SLI) from 1959 to 1960. His Ignatius Reilly is based on another UL English professor–the late Bobby Byrne. The film is dedicated to the memory of Patricia Rickels, a friend and colleague of Ken Toole, and she is featured in the film. UL faculty members Charles Richard, Marcia Gaudet, and Maurice DuQuesnay worked with Sanford on the film. Joel Fletcher—son of a UL President and a friend of Toole—is featured in the film.
